Before the redevelopment, this part of the waterfront was lined with a concrete wall that reflected the waves and created an unpleasant noise. The result is a unique combination of architecture, nature, and art that has become one of Zadar’s defining landmarks.
Just one year after its opening, the project received the European Prize for Urban Public Space, one of Europe’s most prestigious awards for public space design. Thanks to its originality and innovation, the Sea Organ quickly gained international recognition and remains one of the city’s most visited attractions.
Music Composed by the Sea
Beneath the stone steps lies a carefully designed system of pipes and resonance chambers. As the waves hit the shore, they push air through pipes of different lengths and diameters, producing notes of varying pitch.
